Soil testing is a habit we have developed to help in the selection of fertilizer. Plants take nutrients from the soil that need to be replaced for optimum growth. We soil test our alfalfa every year, usually in the fall, as we have too much moisture to fertilize in the spring. We do not add nitrogen to our alfalfa, so this practice is acceptable.
